If your air conditioner is constantly running and it isn’t cooling off your home, you have a legitimate cause for concern.
When it comes to Ohio’s heat, every homeowner should have a cool place of retreat from the heat. After all, you are paying for it!
To help you troubleshoot this issue, we at Dayton Premier Heating & Cooling present the following:
A/C Refrigerant Levels
Air conditioning systems require refrigerants to keep your home nice and cool throughout the hot months. If an A/C doesn’t have the refrigerant it needs, you probably have a leak in the line or in the coils. If this is the case, your system will not be able to keep your home as cool and you’ll need professional assistance. While the A/C labors harder to cool your home, without sufficient levels of refrigerant, it’ll just be spinning its wheels and this will run up your energy bills while at the same time accelerating the aging of your valuable equipment. Because refrigerants are hazardous and should only be handled by a certified professional, we strongly advise calling us to have us handle it safely.
Dirty Air Filter
When an A/C filter is left in place too long and becomes dirty, it will restrict the airflow. This can limit your air conditioning system’s capacity and hinder its ability to eliminate humidity in the air as well. Inadequate airflow over the coils prevents it from removing humidity. As a result, your home will feel warmer and your unit will run continuously.
Wrong Type of A/C Filter
On the flip side, poor airflow could be a result of the wrong type of A/C filter. With a wide variety of air filters available on the market, not all of them are designed to work with all types of home cooling equipment. It could have a MERV rating that is too high. The acronym
MERV, which is short for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, is a rating system that goes from 1 to 16 for residential equipment. The rating of the filter you use should match the one particular to your HVAC system. If you’re having issues with cooling or airflow, make sure you figure out the right MERV rating for your home’s system.
Leaking Air Ducts
Another reason a residential cooling system might seem to be lacking is related to the channels through which the cooled air is being transported.
In order to properly cool a home, the air must first move through a home’s ductwork.
Over time, air ducts can become loose or they can lose insulation. The tape joining them can come off. Then again, they may not have been installed with a tight seal to begin with. When this happens, it can cause air leakage. When cool air escapes, it makes it hard for an air conditioner to lower the temperature to the level you’re expecting. Understanding this, if you believe the air ducts in your home are leaking, give us a call to schedule an inspection. Checking them out won’t take long or cost much.
