Reparing vs. Replacing Your Heating System

“Should I have my furnace repaired, or replace it with a new system?” If you find yourself asking this age-old question, we offer the following three points to consider:

The System's Safety

Safety is more than a saying in our line of work: Safety needs to always come first. If a home heating system ever presents any sort of health or safety hazard, it needs to be replaced, especially if a repair is expensive, or impermanent.

One example would be if your heat exchanger is cracked on your furnace. Something like this could cause carbon monoxide to leak, which could be fatal. With something dangerous like CO2, the decision is obvious. However, if the safety risk is something like a stuck valve or faulty wiring, it might only need to be repaired.Because each situation is different, having a certified technician check it out helps because they can provide a cost-benefit analysis and discuss with you the various options to help you make the best decision for your unique situation.

The System’s Age

The next question you should ask is how old is your unit and compare that to its expected average lifespan. The average lifespan of a furnace fluctuates on average between 15 and 20 years. The idea is to compare your heating system’s age to how well it’s performing. If you aren’t sure how old your system is, you can usually find out by looking at it, as most furnace installers will put the date of installation on the face of the unit when they install it. If you don’t see it written anywhere, you can also get the serial number and model information on the metal identification plate inside the door. Using that number, you can contact the manufacturer to see how old the unit is. Having said that, if your unit is more than 20 years old, that doesn’t necessarily mean it needs to be replaced. When it comes to HVAC systems and furnaces, life expectancies are ballpark figures, and averages at that. Some heating systems last longer than others and certain factors (like consistent preventative maintenance) increase any HVAC system’s lifespan.

The System’s Overall Efficiency

When a furnace or home heating system doesn’t perform efficiently, it’s not able to heat the home as effectively as intended, which means you pay more in heating costs. One major indicator of when a furnace isn’t efficient is when you find certain rooms or areas in the home aren’t able to reach the temperature to which the thermostat is set. Also called “hot and cool zones,” this happens more frequently with older systems that are outdated as they have to work harder to heat the entire home.

HVAC Installation & Replacement in Columbus, OH

Restore Your Heat with a New System Installation

At Columbus Premier Heating & Cooling, we have high efficiency gas furnaces that perform with an efficiency rating of 95 percent or higher. Because these models have been around for years and because of our long-standing industry ties, the affordability of a new furnace might shock you. And yet in spite of this, our NATE-certified technicians still find customers using older systems that run at half of that capacity or even less efficiently.

With heating units that are inefficient, for every therm (or unit) of heat going into the home, another therm (or unit) of heat is lost and wasted either through the attic, a crawl space, the basement, or a furnace exhaust pipe. This waste is senseless because today’s new technology has substantially improved the efficiencies of gas and electric furnaces and heat systems; these home heating systems can run at different speeds, or in different stages so they aren’t always operating at full-speed.

If any of this interests you, and you want to learn more, we would be happy to give you a complete written price quote detailing everything included in your furnace, including the make and model number, the manufacturer information, its efficiency ratings and capacity (SEER, BTU). With all this information and all your options in front of you, you can make a better well-informed decision as a responsible consumer and homeowner when the time comes to buy a new furnace. We have great financing options and there’s never any hidden fees or sales pressure. We treat our customers the way we would like to be treated! And we guarantee customer satisfaction across the board!

We’ve been in this business so long that we’ve made the entire furnace buying and installation/replacement process a fast, easy and positive experience you won’t mind telling others about.
