Getting to Know Cedarsville, OH
Known for being the home of Cedarville University, the historic Village of Cedarville is located in Greene County, 10 minutes from Xenia. Today, Cedarville has a population of more than 4,300 people. It is home to Ohio’s 70th Governor, Mike DeWine. Cedarville was originally laid out as Milford as early as 1816. A U.S. Post Office called Massies Creek had been in the village since 1837. In 1843, the town’s name was changed to Cedarville for a growth of cedar trees near its original town site.
Starting in the 1880s and for many years after, public life in Cedarville mostly revolved around the downtown Cedarville Opera House. This historic location still survives to this day, and has earned a listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The baptist college Cedarville University was founded there in 1887. In Greene County, the village is notable for its Labor Day festivities, called CedarFest, which started as a celebration for the town being the birthplace of James H. Kyle, a 19th century American politician, and prominent Populist, who is credited for establishing the Labor Day as a national holiday.
Each year, the festival includes a parade, a performance by the high school’s marching band, and it features games and carnival rides, a church service, and several exhibitions of the local food. On the Sunday before Labor Day, the weekend of festivities is concluded with fireworks in Cedar Park. During the first weekend of December of each year, Cedarville residents coordinate their exterior lighting decorations for the village’s Little Town of Lights competition, which draws in visitors and families from all over the surrounding region. Included in those festivities are hay rides, outdoor Christmas caroling, photos with Santa Claus, and samples of the local food. This is in conjunction with a live Nativity scene outside of Grace Baptist Church.
