Getting to Know Alpha, OH
Named after the first letter of the Greek alphabet, the community of Alpha was the site of the first mill in Green County. Alpha is a neighborhood of Beavercreek located on the east side of the greater Dayton Metropolitan Area. The United States Postal Service office building in Alpha has the ZIP code of 45301. Alpha has had a post office in operation there since 1850. In that area, Alpha is still one of the oldest communities around.
At one point, the Alpha was a location of a railway station stop along the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad. Although the railway was shut down years ago, the tracks were later turned into a bike path that remains there today. Going back further in history, before the community was given the name Alpha, it was known as Harbine or Harbines. John Harbines laid out the town in 1854.
At one point, it was a lively manufacturing center with a distillery, flour, cotton, woolen, grist, saw and oil mills, and did a great deal of grain, tobacco, and shipping business to all parts of the country.
